Cramping Chronicles: The First Twinge - Writing Gray, Craig & Rowena

WRITING GRAY, CRAIG AND ROWENA

With Cramping Chronicles: The First Twinge coming out on October 13th (pre-order here) I thought I would continue to share with you about what it was like writing three of the other characters since I already wrote about Jessie and Meera (found here). If you don't know, this book is a YA Urban Fantasy and the first in a series, with chronic illness rep and a bunch of other fun things.

The plot is simply that Jessie is fifteen, newly disabled with M.E and Fibromyalgia. She's a full-time wheelchair user and has to start a brand new school because of accessibility issues. A few months before the book starts, Jessie started to feel certain people's physical and emotional pain, she's an empath, and has no idea what lays ahead for her.

Let's start with Gray, he's Jessie's best friend.

WRITING GRAY
Gray had always been one character that I felt very in tune with. He gets Jessie on so many levels and he wants what's best for her, even if he struggles a little with adapting to the change of Jessie no longer being at school with him every day. Gray is aro/ace, lives down the road from Jessie, and is usually there at her place when school finishes.

Gray's the best friend that everyone wants, he grew up with Jessie in that they've been friends since primary school and from there, they've both grown close and gone through all those friendship ups and downs. Gray's the one who works out that Jessie is having some level of pain from him, as one of her triggers Gray wants to make sure that he minimises her pain, but at the same time, he is intrigued by it all. He wants to know more, wants to see where it'll take them, and he's the one that does most of the digging online and off to see if there's a name for what Jessie is experiencing, but also if she's the only one out there.

WRITING CRAIG
Craig was a loner, he knew people at the new school Jessie starts at, but he's always been happily on his own. People misjudge him and when Jessie ends up in his tutor group, he's happy to be the first to actually say hi, and then help her to her first class of the day. Craig's younger sister is disabled, so he's an expert at guiding a wheelchair which is a plus for Jessie since she's not yet got that strength to push herself all over the school.

Craig was a delight to write, I felt like he was another one that I was very much in tune with. He's witty and smart, but he sees things in a very black and white way. There are no shades of grey, you're either doing the right thing, or you're not, and he doesn't have time for people not doing the right thing. Overall, he's someone that should I be fifteen and back at school in my current condition, I'd want on my side.

WRITING ROWENA
Rowena is shy, timid, and another one of those loners. She's not the kind of person who'll call attention to herself and she's not likely to say hello or anything like that. The change comes when she's defending someone she cares about and when that happens, watch out because she will blow her top. Affectionately dubbed Roe by Gray, it's a name she embraces and she's there to both support and help Jessie through these tough times.

Rowena was someone I loved writing because she had that soft exterior but yet was ready to jump in and defend Jessie or any of her friends when the need arose, and she could be brittle, icy and stiff if the need arose. I loved exploring her character and as the series progresses I love writing Roe's character arc.

So there we go, that's some snippets about the other three characters in the first book, and don't forget to pre-order it here. Do you have any questions? Lemme know in the comments below!

As we made our way to what we hoped was Kile’s place, we wondered if it was possible people had tried to leave Raildown this way, only to be caught and dealt with by the army? Could we be making a mistake with following the same trail? Was it possible that they'd come looking here?
“I don’t think this is the best idea,” I said, pausing for a moment as I scoured the forest for any sign of a cottage.

“Shit!” I cried as the snake brushed past my ankle..
Clara must've felt it too, because she jumped back and away from me, turning around just as I fell forward. I saw her reach out to catch me, but I don't know if she did.

Building Your Audience - The After Process

BUILDING YOUR AUDIENCE

This is something that I've talked about in other pieces, about growing your social media platforms (found here, and here), and while I could do another piece about this, it feels like the wrong thing to do. Today I'm gonna be talking about not just your platform growth, but actually building a reading audience, and all my tips that I can give you to manage that.

An author platform, for those who aren't aware, is basically a social media, website, blog, etc, presence that shows people where to find you and interact with you, and learn more about your works. A reading audience can be those same people, but it's also about getting people who don't yet know who you are, interested in your works. It's something where I'm still learning, so I am not going to claim to be an expert on this. I am going to say that after fourteen years in publishing on the self-published/indie side of things, I have picked up a few things that help you along the way.

So what are those things? And how can you get them to work for you? Glad you asked, because I'm going to share them with you now!

#1. BE SURE OF YOUR GENRE.
This might seem like an obvious point. After all, why would you promote a fantasy book with no romantic sub-plot to romance readers, right? That part is obvious, but I'd also want to point out that sometimes it's not as easy to know your genre, or the sub-categories of that genre that your book falls into. Ideally you want at least two when you're promoting, so like with the Dying Thoughts series, it was both paranormal, and mystery/crime. Therefore I promote it to people who love both of those genres.

However, when it comes to choosing a genre, you'll be aware that there are some overlaps. For example, my upcoming new release, Cramping Chronicles: The First Twinge could fall into paranormal OR urban fantasy. Because it's a series, I've decided to look at the overarching plot rather than the books one by one for the MAIN genre, and in this case it slots into Urban Fantasy. Now you can have sub-genres, and they are useful when you're promoting, but for the point of this piece, I would say stick to your MAIN genre(s). You want to be sure that you're reaching out to the right people to read your work, otherwise everyone is just gonna be disappointed and that won't reflect well on you.

#2. BE SURE OF YOUR INTENDED AUDIENCE.
I know that this sounds like another obvious one, because again, why would you promote a Middle-Grade or Young Adult book to adults? Or vice versa? It's true that a lot of the readers of YA are adults, but the idea isn't to market to them, because while they may buy and enjoy your book, they're not the target audience. If you want to write books for adults, then you need to be making sure you do that.

It's pretty simple to work out the intended audience when it comes to age-range. MG is between 10 and 13, YA between 13 and up to 25 in some places, and adult is over 18. However, there are some cross-overs and even then it's better to know which audience you are trying to reach to make sure that your marketing is hitting the right spots. If you're writing YA, then you're going to want to target social media that most young adults use, like Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram. You want to make sure that libraries are aware, and able, to stock your books should someone request it. All of this goes into building your audience, so be sure of who you're trying to attract to your works.

#3. REVIEWS ARE YOUR FRIENDS.
I know you've heard this. Hell, it's something that a lot of people talk about, but it's also true. Reviews are the best way for you to spread the word either by people seeing them on Bookstagram, or seeing a Tweet about your book, if there's a review attached then people are able to judge whether it's something they might enjoy. Reviews help readers decide, and they help authors build their audience, so if you have the chance to contact reviewers, be they bloggers, or bookstagramers or just other authors who do reviews, then take advantage of it. This is a big way that you can build your audience, and just be aware that not all the reviews will be 5 star and that's okay. Liking something is subjective, and one reader might choose to read your book because of the reasons another reviewer listed for why they didn't like it!

And finally, #4. EVENTS HELP
I know that it's not always possibly for people to attend in-person events. Whether it's a case of time, money or just not being in the right part of the world, I get that. I will say that these kinds of events don't always have to be in-person, there are Facebook groups that will hold takeovers, there are ways to go live and read a part of your book, or just chat with the people there. All of these work. And they can be a big way to build your audience.

As far as in-person events go, those are awesome. They don't have to be massive multi-author signings, they can be doing a talk at a school, or a library, or a signing at a local book store. All of these are ways to get your face in front of readers and have them be interested in talking to you, and getting to know more about your books. I've done four multi-author signings and they've always been great! I've also been asked to go to secondary schools and talk about being an author, and those have gone amazing too. It's all about putting yourself out there and seeing people.

So there we have it, my four tips on building your audience. If you have any tips for people, then please do lemme know in the comments, and share them with us all!

The Trials Of An Indie Author: Promotion Helps

THE TRIALS OF AN INDIE AUTHOR: PROMOTION HELPS

It's been a long while since I did a piece on promotion. I mean I did one recently on social media, but that was more about the dos and don'ts, and not the ins and outs of actual promotion. I will make it clear here that I don't intend to give you tips on which sites to use because I find it widely varies depending on author, genre and age range. Even where you yourself are located can be another variable to consider. So this is not one of those listicals that will tell you where and how to promote your book. I simply don't have that information for every individual and to pretend otherwise would be ridiculous.

So what is this going to be about? I'm going to be talking about the small ways that you can help yourself, and help your promotion whether that's ads on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the like, or simple word of mouth. I will however, give you a site to look up that has been extremely useful to me, and that is The Book Robin Hoods. On there you will find a load of bloggers from all over the world listed and you have their contact details ready to reach out. I've done it a number of times with different results, but I'm not here to talk about that, so let's move onto what you can do, in a small way, to help your promotion succeed.

#1 - PLAN, PLAN, AND PLAN SOME MORE.
I can't stress this enough because I've done this the wrong way and I've done it the right way. And the right way is to make sure that you plan your promotion well. You want to make sure that it hits the mark, and to do that you have to know what that mark is. Whether it's a release day, or a sale going on for a short period, you need to be looking into some of this stuff weeks, if not, months in advance. So you need to make sure that you plan ahead, and keep the hype going while the promotion is ongoing, and once it ends.

#2 - START SMALL AND BUILD UP
Along with many things, nothing much happens overnight. I know the thought generally is that you should go all out, to make sure you maximise your profit and interaction. My advice though? Start small, you don't know if this promotion is going to hit the right audience, even if you've done a ton of research (which I always recommend you do!) you don't know yet if it'll work for you. There's a lot of ways to go about promotion, and sometimes what works for one author in your genre, classification, location, just won't for another. It's not as simple as copying what someone else does and away you go. You need to be sure that this is the right thing for you, and so I would seriously recommend starting small and seeing how it goes. If you get the positive reaction, then start building up.

#3 - ASK OTHER AUTHORS
This might seem like it goes against what I just said above, but asking other authors not just for advice on what worked for them, but also for them to help you with your promotion is always a good idea. This can be something from newsletter swaps, to sharing in their reader group, to shouting you out in Twitter or doing a post about it on their blog. Any number of things can help with promotions, and it's always good to have the people who write alongside you in your corner. However, one thing that shouldn't need to be said, but does, always reciprocate if you can. If they let you share, you do the same. It's only fair and given that you're writing similar genres etc, your readers could very well being theirs and vice versa.

And finally, #4 - UTILISE YOUR OWN PLATFORM
Now I know that a lot of writers are introverts, and on top of that, there's the whole cultural idea that you shouldn't be selling yourself, or anything, or bragging about what you've achieved. And while some of that is true, it's also true that you have this platform of people following you. They either do that because they like you, or they're interested in your work. So make sure that you actively tell them when you have promotion going on. They do want to know, but just don't be blasting it at them every tweet or post. Generally I'll do a post every few days, and always make sure I'm adding something new rather than just a copy of the post itself. Overall, these people do want to know things about you and your work, so use that!

So there we have it, my four points about how you can help yourself when running a promotion. I know that it's not always easy to put yourself out there, but it's part and parcel of being an author. It's not always fun, but sometimes it can really make a difference.

"You don't?" she asked, raising an eyebrow as if she was amused. "You honestly don't see what they do... what you do as violence? You take the citizens of this cityship and you inject poison into their veins and stand idly by waiting for them to die. That, in our book, is murder plain and simple."
"I don't make the laws," I said, my arms sore from the iron grip of the people holding me.
"No, but you do carry them out and I bet you're one of those who fully believes in the system. For the good of the country and all that," she said, in a mocking tone.
