Review of The Spunky Girl & Her Popular Player by Nicole Heart

Someone stole Santa’s suit!

Can two toy store elves solve the crime?

Better yet, can they do it without falling for each other?

Avery has had enough of Alfredo’s complaining. She wears her elf costume with pride. He scoffs every time they have to sing and dance.

When Santa’s suit goes missing, Avery thinks this might be her chance to get rid of Alfredo once and for all. If she can prove he's the thief, his dad--the store owner--will have to fire him.

It's the perfect plan until mysterious texts pour in, leading them on an adventure to win back Santa's suit and save Christmas.

My Review:  5 STARS

I picked this up because the blurb and the cover looked interesting. I was looking for a quick read and a nice romance, and I got both in one small package. I loved Avery and Alfredo from the start, both were fully formed characters and the little mystery for them to solve was nicely woven between the words. I adored reading as they started to fall for each other, and the things they learned along the way. It was an adorable Christmasy story and made me smile. A nice quick read, and I very much enjoyed it. Good one to pick up for anyone, at any time of year!

Writer Stereotypes - The Creative Process

WRITER STEREOTYPES

A long while back, I did an author tag on Authortube about writer stereotypes (video found here) and I realised recently that it wasn't something I'd talked about here on the blog. While I try not to repeat myself too much for those who follow both, it makes sense to do something fun for those who just read rather than watch. Writer stereotypes are the kinda of thing that you hear about a lot.

We're addicted to tea/coffee/caffeine. We usually have cats (though I know more with dogs to be honest). We're anti-social introverts. We like to have lots of notebooks. We don't ever write in said notebooks. Our search histories are scary, and we're probably, depending on the genre, the best people to go to hide a body and/or get some random fact from. None of them are meant in a derogatory way, it's just something fun to think about. Like if you have someone in your life who fits all of these, maybe they might be a writer? Who knows, writing is such a broad term and there are so many people who don't consider themselves writers, but who will bang out a massive fanfic and go about their days.

I thought it would be fun to tell you what stereotypes I fit into, and maybe you can let me know about any others you're aware of and whether you fit into any, down in the comments.

#1 WE'RE ADDICTED TO TEA/COFFEE/CAFFEINE

This one is kinda true to be honest. I am very much British and love me a cup of it during my writing time. It's something you're bound to find on my desk, and while I don't drink anywhere near as much as I did, if I'm out and about at a coffee shop, that's gonna be my order.

BUT... I mostly drink decaf bar the two cups of caffeinated at like 4/5am. I'm also allergic to coffee and so have never really tried any of that because I have this weird quirk where I like being able to breathe!

#2 WE USUALLY HAVE CATS
We all know this is true. You only have to check my Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and so on to see that I do have cats. I live with five of them. There are more cats in our house than humans, and we are very much okay with that. We have Miss Spaghetti as the oldest at 15, she's also called Hetti. We have Miss Violet and Mr Dash, who are sister and brother, and both almost 14. They're tabbies and while Dash is gentle and kind, Violet will cut you if you mess with her. And we have Miss Tortellini and Miss Mink, one is mine, the other belongs to Mx. K, who's B's child. The last two will be 2 in July. I'll let you spot the theme between the cats that are mine!

#3 WE'RE ANTI-SOCIAL INTROVERTS
I don't know whether I'd call myself anti-social, my mother probably would. A lot of the time I spend alone is because my health makes it next to impossible to get out and do things on the regular. I do find that when I talk to people online, it's easier to be myself and from there I find I can get on with a lot of people. That said, I do only have a very small circle of friends offline. My two besties are the ones I talk to most and see most, though one lives in Finland so that makes that harder.

As for being an introvert, yeah that sounds like me. I don't know if it's because of my chronic illness that social events tire me out, or the introvert in me peaking their head up and saying enough. Either way, I think I hit that one on the head.

#4 WE LIKE TO HAVE A LOT OF NOTEBOOKS

This used to be true for me. I was very much someone who could be swayed by a pretty notebook. I have some on my desk shelf, and some that I'll probably never use, but I'd also happily give them to someone else if they had a use for it. I'm not a writer who hoards them though because I just don't have the space, and I also don't have the money to just keep buying them when I just don't use them.

#5 WE DON'T WRITE IN SAID NOTEBOOKS

This one is true, but it's not because I'm a writer, but because my chronic conditions make writing as in holding a pen painful, so they don't get used, which is why I'm happy to hand them off to people who do have a use for them. Until then, they sit on my desk shelf.

#6 OUR SEARCH HISTORIES ARE SCARY

Oh boy, do I meet this one! I have asked Siri and Alexa things that I'm sure have me on a watch list somewhere. I don't do that much searching on Goggle these days because over the years I've learned from contacts and have people I can reach out to if I need clarification on a plot point. I think if I didn't have those connections, then my search history would be a lot worse.

#7 WE'RE THE BEST PEOPLE TO HIDE A BODY AND/OR FIND RANDOM KNOWLEDGE
Yeah, I'd say this is kinda true for me. I write crime, I read crime, I could probably, in a pinch work out what to do with a body. But I don't want to, bit of a wimp where that's concerned!

The random knowledge one is also kinda true for me. I'm someone who collects facts. I might not always have a use for them, but when I do, it's a whole lot of fun to be able to blow someone's mind with them!

So there we go, those are the stereotypes and the ones I meet. Do you meet any of these? Lemme know in the comments below!

Review of Motorcyles And Magic by Julie L Kramer

Motorcycles, Dobermans, and magic. Which is more dangerous?

Renegade Mosley is on her own, and has been for months. Her deadbeat dad has been long gone, and her mother is gone as well, leaving only an enchanted bracelet and a restored motorcycle, along with a note explaining that the only way she'll be safe is if she is gone. But Renegade has never been one to play it safe.

Now the only thing to do is track down her mother, using the bracelet and a tracking spell. Can she use her magic to track down her mother and avoid the magical biker gang that has set their sights on them both, or will she crash and burn?

My Review:  2.5 STARS

I picked this up because the blurb and cover called out to me, and while the first chapter had be intrigued, I did find myself disappointed with the story. It felt very much like everything was underdeveloped and the story itself wasn’t fully fleshed out. I was able to read through it in one setting, and while I understood the plot beats, it felt very raw and underwritten. I enjoyed some of the world building, but it wasn’t a favourite read and not an author that I would read again. Overall, a disappointing read for me, but if you love fast paced stories that deal with magic and a lot of internal thoughts, then this might be the one for you.

“He told me about the work Mum did and offered me a similar position,” I told him, letting go of the previous conversation.
“What about school?”
“I guess he’d work around that.”
“Good. And homework?”
“Same thing.”
“And how do you feel about it?”
“Dunno.” I shrugged again.

Editing/Revision Stress - The After Process

EDITING/REVISION STRESS

I am, at the time of writing this, in the midst of revision for one project, and about to start the professional edit of another. It's been over a year now since I last went through a professional editing cycle and I'm actually kinda nervous about it. By the time I post this, it'll have already begun, and I'm hoping that the time away, the chance to work on revisions some more, will have made things better for the project itself. That said, editing and revision have never really been my favourite part of the writing and publishing process, so it may be that even with things running smoother, I'm still anxious as all hell about it. I just don't know.

For those of you wondering why I took a year off editing, I explained more here, but to recap, I was burnt out, I needed more time with the project and it made sense to take a year off, and to start afresh in 2022. I learned a lot about myself during the time off. I made sure that I still did some revision as and when I felt okay to do so, and I actually found myself liking some parts of the process itself. I also learned a lot about the way I worked and how I approached things, and that was a huge help to me as well.

April 2021 was the time I first opened INVISIBLE and started revisions for it. I wasn't sure what to expect, having just come out of a longer editing cycle than usual because of my need for surgery smack dab in the middle of things. I have spent that time working on it piece by piece and also had some sensitivity readers look it over for a number of reasons. I'll go more into why another time, but it's down to the massive amounts of disabled characters and wanting to portray them accurately.

And now, in May 2022, I am still working on it, it's actually out to betas right now and I'm hopeful about their feedback. It means that, for the moment, the only project that isn't drafting related is CRAMPING CHRONICLES: THE SECOND PANG, which is the book that was supposed to come out last year, and is now slated by release in November. I have worked hard on making the book the best it could be, but at the same time, I know my editors will catch something, probably a lot of things.

One thing you have to remember as a writer is that a lot of the time, no matter how many times you comb through the chapters and the pages, you will miss things. Sometimes they're huge, sometimes they're not, but whatever they are, it's better to catch them now before the book is published and out there for the whole world to see. I know as indie authors we can pull a book, edit it and then reupload it, but I don't like doing that. I don't think I have ever done that, bar catching the odd typo here and there. It's not something I want to do because the way I see it, the book should be ready before I hit publish. If it's not, then I've failed myself along the way, which is purely a personal choice thing.

I think something good to keep in mind when it comes to revision and editing is that the two are such a necessary part of the process. While you need to have the outside eyes look over your work to be able to spot plot holes and the like, you also need that feedback so that when you're writing something new, you maybe don't make those same errors. I know that there have been things my editors have told me not to do, that I've incorporated into my writing now. It makes for an easier time overall, and while it's a headache to go through, for me at least, it's also a good thing. It's what keeps the readers turning the pages, and what keeps them coming back time and time again.

So while I am a little nervous and anxious about restarting editing, I know that it's something that has to be done, and it will be okay. I want this book to be in the hands of my readers, and to do that, I have to keep going through the harder times to get to the finish line.

Any questions? Lemme know in the comments below.

Review of XOXO, Olivia by Ginger Li

Freshman year, he ignored me.

Sophomore year, he rejected me.

Senior year, he dated me…

Well, sort of.

I’ve loved Micah Reyes ever since I was sixteen. Unfortunately, he’s made it clear that he only sees me as his sister’s best friend.

But when I need someone to be my pretend boyfriend for an event, Micah steps in to take the role.

My brain knows that our relationship isn’t real.

But my heart?

Well, that’s another story.

My Review: 5 STARS

I’ve read the other two books in this series so when I saw this one was coming out, I had to have it. Olivia is so very much in love with her best friend’s brother and I knew I was in for a ride from the snippets of their interactions in other books. I adored the chemistry between the two of them, and the way the story took you along the whole journey right to the very happy ending. It was an amazing read, and one that I very much enjoyed. Highly recommend to those who love a good sweet romance between two engaging and relatable characters!
